BARRIERA is a non-profit association and exhibition space founded in 2007 by a group of collectors. It is located in a former industrial building in the Barriera di Milano district of Turin. Since its foundation, BARRIERA has focused its activities on two principal curatorial strands: interaction with the surrounding environment and the training of young art professionals.
The former involves collaborations with local organizations and communities, while the latter focuses on supporting and organizing exhibitions and events to foster exchange and professional growth. An emblematic example of this is the Mirror Project, a series of exhibitions developed in close collaboration with young artists and curators. Now in its fourteenth edition, it has been made since 2015 in collaboration with the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation, allowing participants in the CAMPO course for young curators to curate a project, often their first opportunity to engage with the art world.
The gravitational center of BARRIERA is Colazione, organized during the week of the Artissima fair in synergy with leading art institutions. Since 2007, and in partnership with both Italian and international galleries, Colazione has showcased internationally acclaimed artists, including Agnieszka Polska, Aslı Çavuşoğlu, Ariel Schlesinger, Chiara Camoni, David Renggli, Kan Xuan, Latifa Echakhch, Leonor Antunes, Luca Bertolo, Jonathan Monk, Philipp Timischl, Trisha Baga, and Vadim Fishkin.
Since 2018, the program of BARRIERA has been run by Sergey Kantsedal (with Yuliya Say acting in support from 2019 to 2023). During this period, the space has become a meeting point for artists, curators, and collectors, fostering cross-disciplinary interactions, most notably with the fields of music and independent publishing. This exchange has helped catalyze an underground scene in Turin, characterized by a community-driven approach and alternative aesthetics. The exhibitions and projects produced during this period are distinguished by an artistic output tailored to the specific characteristics of the space, developed through an intense process of collaboration and sharing.
